In what appears to be a most incredible statistic, YouTube recently announced that over one billion hours a day are spent by people all over the world watching videos at its site. No longer is the social media giant just the place for cat videos or preteen blather and drivel, but has branched out to become one of the most significant platforms for serious content and video production.
Recent research by the Nielsen company has revealed that television viewing is at around 1.25 billion hours a day, for both recorded and for live shows. The firm says that those numbers have been steadily falling over the past few years. While this has been going on, YouTube viewership continues to gain ground and soar despite certain challenges. In fact, viewership has increased over tenfold within the last few years alone.
Vice President for Engineering at YouTube, Cristos Goodrow, states that, "A few years back, we made a big decision at YouTube. While everyone seemed focused on how many views a video got, we thought the amount of time someone spent watching a video was a better way to understand whether a viewer really enjoyed it. It wasn’t an easy call, but we thought it would help us make YouTube a more engaging place for creators and fans."
Over the past several years, the video content presented at the the platform has become more sleek and more professional in many ways. While music videos continue to reign over the viewership, more serious channels have sprung up and engaged a wide and diverse viewership. Many serious video producers now see the platform as a chance to show their work and, possibly, make a living doing it.
In fact, YouTube has been quietly overwhelming its more famous competitors like Facebook and Netflix. Facebook video only gets seen for about 100 million hours a day while just 116 million hours a day are spent watching content at NetFlix. The Wall Street Journal has reported that, in 2014, YouTube generated over $4 billion in revenue alone but only broke even. The platform continue to struggle to make revenue and has rather low numbers with regard to trying to recruit subscribers to its premier ersion known as YouTube Red. Content includes everything from fashion and lifestyle content to cooking shows, history, sports, fitness and popular episodic shows. More than 400 hours of video content, generated from around the world, is uploaded to YouTube every minute of every day.
For Goodrow, "It represents the enjoyment of the fantastically diverse videos that creative people make every single day. Around the world, people are spending a billion hours every day rewarding their curiosity, discovering great music, keeping up with the news, connecting with their favorite personalities, or catching up with the latest trend."STREAMING & IP2 min read
