VideoSwitch, a leading Argentine technology development company for television, together with SoniVisión, its strategic partner in the region, were in charge of designing and implementing a laboratory that will allow training both students and students. VideoSwitch will be showcasing its products at the 2020 NAB Show in Las Vegas.
The National Learning Institute (INA), an autonomous Costa Rican institution that focuses on para-university technical education, faced with the advancement of Digital Television in that country, made the decision to incorporate an integral laboratory to expand its academic offer in this area. It should have all the current systems of transmission of digital audiovisual content, which included: Terrestrial systems, Cable, Satellite, and Streaming. The laboratory should serve both to train new technicians as well as to train experienced professionals who need to deepen knowledge in the new technologies.
The company chosen to carry out this task was VideoSwitch, together with the collaboration of its partner in Costa Rica, SoniVisión. The laboratory was conceived from the beginning with the aim of being composed of real equipment, the same that the technicians would use to make a real transmission. We also sought to cover the four most used media today: Terrestrial Television in ISDB-Tb standard (the standard chosen in Costa Rica and much of Latin America), Cable Television, Satellite Television, and Streaming through the Internet, what is known as OTT (Over The Top). At the same time, a test platform for Ginga applications was incorporated, a standard that is being promoted in Costa Rica.
The complete system consists of more than 30 computers and more than 10 software modules running on 4 servers, among which are: a 70W transmitter, 2 H.264 Encoders, 4 Multiplexers, 2 EPG servers and service generators auxiliaries for DVB and ISDB-Tb standards (Closed Caption, Ginga, Teletext), a conditional access system (CAS), a Streaming server, several measuring instruments, antennas for transmission and reception, and multiple receivers (Set-Top Box) so that students can perform simulations and practices.
Marcelo Indarramendi, Development Engineering Manager of VideoSwitch and principal responsible for the design of the laboratory told us: “With this acquisition, INA has the first integral laboratory of Digital Television of Costa Rica, and one of the most complete and modern in all Latin America. Not only the Institute officials are amazed at the completeness of this system, but also the professors, who glimpse the new academic offer that they can propose with this infrastructure, as well as the companies, which will now have an excellent space to improve the technical knowledge of your personal."
