Wisconsin Public Television Upgrades to Video Devices PIX 250i for Tapeless Workflow

Russ Awe, remote truck engineer at Wisconsin Public Television (WPT), has selected the Video Devices' rack-mounted PIX 250i file-based video deck to upgrade their video production recording tools. The move marks a significant shift towards a tapeless workflow, enabling WPT to streamline its post-production process and capture high-quality audio and video for various projects.

Awe, who has a long history of using Video Devices' products, particularly the PIX 240i portable video/audio recorder, chose the PIX 250i due to its extensive video capabilities, including tapeless, file-based recording and playback. The device records edit-ready Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD files and allows simultaneous multi-drive recording, providing peace of mind through rock-solid redundancy and two-drive backup capabilities.

PIX 250i's Audio Capabilities a Game-Changer

The PIX 250i also boasts extensive audio capabilities, including 12 tracks of audio, making it an ideal solution for applications requiring multiple tracks of audio, such as live events, concerts, and sports broadcasts. Awe praises the device's audio displays, stating that they provide a high level of confidence in recording what he needs to.

The PIX 250i has been used by WPT in two projects so far, including the University of Wisconsin (UW) Band's Spring Concert and the 125th anniversary celebration of Viterbro University. In both instances, the device proved invaluable in capturing high-quality audio and video footage for post-production.

Streamlining Workflow with PIX 250i

The PIX 250i has also enabled WPT to significantly speed up its production workflow. By recording to the device and then directly transferring those files into Avid via AMA (Avid Media Assist), the station can now ingest files into Avid in a third of the time it would take to digitize a one-hour tape.

Awe notes that the PIX 250i's ability to break down movie files into separate audio and video tracks has greatly simplified the post-production process. This, combined with the AMA, has allowed WPT to focus more on creative aspects rather than tedious file management tasks.
