Nick Jushchyshyn, program director of Digital Media and Virtual Production at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design, has integrated Blackmagic Design's Ultimatte 12 HD and Ultimatte 12 HD Mini into the university's virtual production pipeline. The integration allows for advanced real-time compositing within the Animation, Capture and Effects Lab (ACE-Lab) and Immersive Research Lab (IRL).

Enhanced Learning and Production Capabilities

Jushchyshyn has rebuilt the main teaching studio's A/V architecture around Ultimatte 12 HDs and ATEM SDI switchers. This setup provides a comprehensive toolset for students to learn virtual production techniques, including real-world applications in major sports broadcasts, network news, and weather productions.

The affordability of the Ultimatte 12 HD models has enabled Drexel to invest in multiple units, enhancing its capabilities in green screen compositing and 3D camera tracking. Jushchyshyn notes that these tools are crucial for teaching cutting-edge digital media skills relevant to industry standards.

Remote Learning and Hybrid Spaces

The integration of Blackmagic Design's technology has also facilitated remote learning and hybrid meeting spaces at Drexel. Jushchyshyn personally uses an Ultimatte 12 HD and ATEM Mini setup for creating his virtual office, demonstrating how these tools can transform small physical spaces into dynamic virtual environments.

Outside the classroom, students gain practical experience by managing live productions for university events both on and off campus. The ATEM SDI Extreme ISO switcher is permanently installed in the main teaching studio, providing flexibility and ease of use for documenting motion capture classes and other activities.

Advanced Features and User-Friendly Design

Jushchyshyn appreciates the versatility and capabilities of Blackmagic Design's products. The ATEM SDI Extreme ISO offers eight inputs and four outputs, allowing for seamless integration of multiple video sources and monitors. Its built-in Fairlight suite of audio processors ensures high-quality audio management, while the SuperSource feature enhances the overall production quality.

By incorporating these tools into their curriculum, Drexel University is equipping students with practical skills that align with industry standards, preparing them for careers in virtual production and related fields. The integration of Blackmagic Design's technology has streamlined workflows and enhanced the learning experience across various labs and classrooms at Drexel.
