Sinclair and Nexstar have received the 2025 NAB Show Project of the Year award in the Media Operations category for deploying a Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) Mesh Network. The project showcases the effectiveness of delivering precise, traceable time through an ATSC 3.0 broadcast network.
Triveni Digital and Avateq Solutions Power Innovative Project
The deployment, involving Sinclair, Cunningham Broadcasting, and Nexstar, utilized two ATSC 3.0 stations to test BPS and its mesh network management system. WNUV in Baltimore and KWGN in Denver were chosen as strategic sites for the trial, with WHUT in Washington, D.C., providing a crucial time source.
Triveni Digital provided equipment and established a cloud-based hub to gather performance data from these stations. The project demonstrated BPS's ability to deliver accurate timing information, validated by NIST, that complements GPS.
Judged on Innovation and Real-World Impact
The NAB Show Project of the Year Award recognizes ambitious projects with significant technical advancements and real-world applicability. Judges selected winners based on these criteria, and Sinclair, Nexstar, Triveni Digital, and Avateq were recognized for their collaborative effort.
Mark Simpson, president and CEO at Triveni Digital, expressed pride in the award: “We are honored to receive the NAB Show’s very first Project of the Year Award. BPS offers a vital, resilient timing service through its mesh network design, ensuring reliable performance even during disruptions.”
The project exemplifies how existing ATSC 3.0 infrastructure can be leveraged for essential services like precise timekeeping, enhancing broadcast reliability and resilience.
