The short film "Sealed Off," a contender at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, has been graded using DaVinci Resolve Studio by colorist Aaron Peak. Directed by John Jiang, the film explores themes of human connection amidst wartime chaos in late 1930s Shanghai.
Challenges and Solutions
Jiang faced numerous challenges during production at Shanghai Chedun Film Park, including limited resources and unpredictable weather conditions. These factors led to inconsistent footage, especially in color sequences. To address these issues, Peak utilized DaVinci Resolve Studio’s extensive toolset.
Colorist's Approach
Aaron Peak, known for his long-standing use of DaVinci Resolve, tackled the grading process with a focus on balancing different lighting conditions and creating seamless transitions between black-and-white and color scenes. "I love the velvety black and white sequences," Peak said, explaining that he worked extensively to design transitions that enhanced the film’s emotional narrative.
Peak employed various features within DaVinci Resolve Studio to achieve the desired visual effects. This included using glow, selective keying, grain, and stabilization tools for overhead shots and composites. He also replaced colors outside train windows and created color transition animations, all within the software.
Creative Vision
Director John Jiang praised Peak’s work, noting how the color transitions became critical story elements. "With the first transition from black and white to color, while the interior is colored, the exterior remains monochrome," Jiang described. He highlighted several iconic shots where vibrant colors coincided with rising tension between characters.
Ultimately, Peak’s skillful use of DaVinci Resolve Studio allowed "Sealed Off" to convey its complex narrative through nuanced visual storytelling. The film is set to be exhibited at the Tribeca Film Festival, showcasing how professional tools can elevate cinematic experiences.
