The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing saw Cobham Tactical Communications and Surveillance's technology play a crucial role in delivering live coverage of the track and field events. The company, along with its Chinese partner CSS Group, provided equipment for host broadcaster CCTV to produce high-quality video signals for regional broadcasters around the world.
Equipment Deployment
The historic Beijing National Stadium, also known as the 'bird's nest', was the focal point for CCTV's coverage. CSS Group deployed four Cobham Solo H.264 ENG TX transmitters and PRORXD HD receivers, along with respective camera control systems to capture the action.
The video signals were sent to the central production compound over standard HD-SDI fibre optic systems. Camera control was achieved using Cobham's specialist four-in-one system, enabling four cameras to be controlled over a single UHF channel. The UHF transmitting unit was placed in the stadium and delivered excellent performance using minimal power.
Operations and Maintenance
CSS Group provided setup, operation, and maintenance for the technology used within the stadium as well as RF production for the marathon, including aerial production and transmission. According to CSS Group President Roger Wong, Cobham's Solo ENG and camera control systems consistently deliver high-quality video signals with robust reliability.
