Veteran production sound mixer Tony Smyles has spent three decades honing his craft on film, television, and commercial sets. With an impressive resume under his belt, Smyles relies on the expertise of Sound Devices to capture top-notch audio for his projects.

Sound Design Expertise

Smyles' inventory includes two 664 Field Production Mixers, a 633 Compact Mixer, and a 788T Audio Recorder . He custom designs his sound packages based on each project's specific audio requirements, drawing from the extensive feature set of Sound Devices equipment.

Recent Projects

Smyles recently worked on an independent film, Broken Links, where he utilized the 633 and 664 mixers. He used the 633 as a portable ENG-style rig for solo shoots, while the 664 served as his audio cart setup.

In another project, How Not to Kill a Woman, Smyles worked solo, relying on the 633 and Schoeps SuperCMIT 2 U shotgun microphone to capture fast-paced power takes. He praised the portability of the 633, which allowed him to stay nimble in the face of rapid script changes.

Control Room Setup

Smyles also deployed his Sound Devices equipment on reality TV shows like Hardcore Pawn. In this setup, he used the 788T as a central hub, recording eight tracks of audio nonstop in the control room. The recorder's signal outputs and routing options proved invaluable for monitoring and controlling the audio.

Sound Devices Versatility

Smyles appreciates the versatility of Sound Devices equipment, citing its ability to record to SD cards, CompactFlash cards, and different file formats. He values the redundancy offered by having two recording mediums available at all times.
