SoftBank has successfully implemented a 4K VR live streaming workflow using Blackmagic Design's ATEM Constellation 8K switchers and Teranex Mini converters for its VR SQUARE platform. This integration allows SoftBank to deliver immersive virtual reality experiences to users via smartphones.
VR SQUARE Service Expands with High-Capacity Communications
Eiji Koyama, from SoftBank's Service Planning Department, stated that the VR SQUARE service was developed with 5G technology in mind. The platform offers a wide range of VR content, including live concerts and original idol performances, catering to diverse audiences.
Collaborative Approach for Venue Installations
In collaboration with other partners, SoftBank has set up VR streaming systems at venues such as the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara and the PayPay Dome in Fukuoka. The system employs cameras and switchers to capture and stitch images from both eyes, creating a seamless VR experience.
Koyama explained that SoftBank uses permanent installations of the system at some venues, with staff on-site to operate it. For large-scale events, they deploy a portable version of the setup.
Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness
Prior to implementing the current system, SoftBank required about 10 staff members for each streaming operation, which was time-consuming. The new setup is more compact, fitting into a 19-inch rack, and can be managed via software rather than a large control panel.
Kazuo Igarashi from the Content Promotion Section noted that the ATEM Constellation 8K met their requirements for handling 8K content with sufficient inputs and outputs. Its affordability was also a significant factor in their decision.
Stability and Scalability
The ATEM Constellation 8K has proven to be stable, supporting SoftBank's extensive VR streaming schedule. The system handles over 250 events annually at venues like the Nippon Budokan, ensuring reliable performance.
Koyama mentioned that the switcher's stability and ease of use have enabled remote operation for many streams, reducing on-site staff requirements.
Future Enhancements
While currently streaming in 4K, SoftBank aims to explore higher resolutions like 8K for VR content. The company plans to continue improving the quality of its VR SQUARE service to meet user expectations.
