Rohde & Schwarz has released an enhanced version of its popular R&S®SpycerNode storage platform, now known as SpycerNode2. This new model builds on the high-performance computing (HPC) technologies of the original while adding flexibility and scalability, better media performance, and improved connectivity.

New Architecture Boosts Performance

Central to the success of the R&S®SpycerNode family is its reliance on HPC technologies from IBM, particularly the Spectrum Scale RAID software. The SpycerNode2 retains the 5U storage appliance format but adds two redundant 1U RAID control servers. This new architecture increases RAID and delivery performance by up to 50% in 4K applications.

Dynamic Media Cache Enhances Efficiency

The introduction of Dynamic Media Cache, utilizing high-performance caching on NVM Express modules within the RAID controllers, addresses the demands of post-production environments. This feature reduces the load on disk arrays by caching frequently accessed content, improving performance for tasks such as editing and audio production.

Expanded Applications and Integration

Initially designed for channel playout, R&S®SpycerNode is increasingly being used in post-production due to its high-performance storage capabilities. The new functionalities have been developed based on user feedback, ensuring that the platform meets the needs of diverse media applications.

The 5U disk drive chassis can accommodate up to 84 drives (including SSDs) in blocks of 28, and a single pair of SpycerNode2 controllers can manage four chassis for a maximum capacity of 6.7 petabytes. Additionally, these systems can be networked for even larger storage solutions.

Robust Data Protection and Cloud Integration

Rohde & Schwarz’s unique VSA (virtual storage access) technology ensures complete failover protection and uninterrupted data flow. The SpycerNode2 also supports S3 export protocols, facilitating the creation of hybrid storage architectures that integrate cloud-based tiered storage.

“We are proud to introduce R&S®SpycerNode2,” said Duncan Beattie, product manager at Rohde & Schwarz. “The platform leverages IBM’s powerful HPC architecture and delivers significant improvements tailored to the demands of broadcast and media users.”

The new SpycerNode2 will be showcased alongside other key media products from Rohde & Schwarz at NAB 2023.
