In a tribute show celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic Saturday Night Fever movie soundtrack, Pronology's mRes encoder was at the heart of capturing live performances by diverse artists including Celine Dion, Pentatonix, DNCE, John Legend, and Barry Gibb. The production, held on February 16th at Microsoft Theater, featured a series of hits from the GRAMMY Hall of Fame-honored soundtrack.

Seamless Workflow with mRes

The mRes encoder, Pronology's first standalone device, recorded multiple channels of video per SDI or IP input channel without missing any action. It simultaneously produced a high-resolution media file, an edit proxy, and a live web-streamable proxy for each performance.

“Not only was Pronology key in the recording of the show and providing files to the post-production team, but we also created a series of rehearsal screeners for producers to review,” said Jonathan Aroesty, president of Pronology. “mRes allowed show files to move seamlessly from the stage to screening areas and edit suites.”

Technical Details and Usage

The All Mobile Video production truck, equipped with six mRes encoders and 11 Sony cameras, ensured robust recording capabilities for the live event. Each mRes box recorded four channels per input, allowing three boxes to handle all 12 streams as primary records and a second set of three boxes for redundancy.

“Pronology's capability of writing Avid MXF OpAtom files to portable storage is key for productions with fast turnarounds,” added Jillian Arnold, an operator at Pronology. “We employed this workflow to send five- to 10-second test files via FTP, ensuring post-production could review the files quickly and in the correct format.”

The mRes encoder has also been utilized for other high-profile events including the OSCARS, Critics' Choice Awards, FOX's Grease: Live!, and the MTV Movie Awards.
