The PBS documentary “When We Were Shuttle,” a film commissioned by WLRN in Miami, Florida, has been captured using Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera 6K. The project, directed by Zachary Weil and photographed by Kyle McConaghy, premiered at the Kennedy Space Center's IMAX theater in October 2022.

Film Explores Human Side of Space Shuttle Program

The documentary delves into the lives of six individuals who were instrumental behind the scenes during the Space Shuttle Program. Through personal recollections and archival footage, “When We Were Shuttle” provides a unique perspective on the human element of the program until its conclusion in 2011.

Choice of Camera System

Weil and McConaghy selected the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K for its compact form factor, which allowed them to capture interviews and footage with minimal disruption. “We discussed several different possible cameras, but the size and weight of the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K made it ideal for handheld work,” McConaghy said.

The camera’s ability to shoot in Blackmagic RAW format at full 6K resolution (6144 x 3456) with constant quality settings Q3 or Q5 enabled the filmmakers to record extensive interviews without large storage requirements. “Shooting long interviews with Blackmagic RAW is such a game changer,” McConaghy noted.

Color Grading Process

The documentary’s color grading was handled by McConaghy using DaVinci Resolve Studio. The team aimed to create a warm, nostalgic look inspired by archival material captured on 16 mm film stock and Kodachrome.

“Blackmagic RAW’s highlight retention was great, which helped us achieve the desired retro aesthetic,” McConaghy said. The software’s capabilities allowed for seamless integration between shooting and post-production processes.

Challenges and Solutions

The production faced tight constraints, including a one-year deadline to complete the film. “There wasn’t much time to shoot in stages or make corrections,” Weil said. The team had to be efficient from preparation through filming.

“When We Were Shuttle” is now available on the film's website and will premiere on American Public Television in early 2023.
