a10 Netflix announced this week that it has already spent around $1.75 billion on European productions in a continuing effort to out perform its OTT rivals. The move will entail buying original content and programming as well as being heavily involved in co-productions. The USA based streaming juggernaut continues to go wherever it can to inspire future growth and get the jump on its many competitors. Netfilx CEO, Reed Hastings, announced in Berlin that the company has invested that $1.75 billion since 2012 on European film and television productions. The total, Hastings said, is around 90 productions. He continued to say that, "We are one of the most active supporters and financiers of European content. We’re creating these global audiences for great local productions." Hastings declared that Netflix has over 93 million regular viewers and that the company will be boosting its foreign language capability to a total of 15 languages by the end of the year. Hastings and Netflix are looking to further integrate their services into standard television as he announced that the company has reached a deal with one of Europe's major cable providers, Germany based UnityMedia. The new alliance will eventually allow Netflix to be fully integrated into the television cable boxes. Hastings has been in Berlin to tout the company's all new European based content and recent releases. Hastings also stressed how Netflix was looking to improve its overall services as he said that, "We’re improving the personalization so that the films and series on the homepage are more tailored to your tastes, so it’s easier to find several great things to watch. We’re improving the video quality, supporting Dolby digital, 4k, HDR, amazing new video quality..." Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos said of the Europoean expansion that, "Great storytelling knows no geographical bounds. After four years of original programming and filming in 18 countries, we know compelling stories can come from anywhere and, no matter their origin, can resonate with audiences around the world."
