NEP UK has partnered with Imagine Communications to enhance the quality of premium sports coverage by integrating multiple Selenio™ Network Processor (SNP) appliances into four of their largest outside broadcast trucks. This move aims to provide seamless, automated workflows for delivering various signal formats, including 4K and UHD, HD, standard dynamic range (SDR), and high dynamic range (HDR).
Signal Conversion Engine
The SNP appliances serve as a high-density signal conversion engine within the OB trucks. According to Chris Cannon, Director of Technical Operations at NEP UK, the adoption of SNP allows for efficient processing in tight spaces. Each 1RU device features four independent processing blocks that can be configured with different software personalities, enabling functionalities such as signal format conversion and SDR-HDR conversion.
NEP UK has ordered a mix of licenses to support various tasks, including HD, 3G, and 4K signal format conversions, as well as dynamic range conversions between SDR, HLG, PQ, and Slog3. The compact size and flexibility of the SNP make it ideal for outside broadcast environments where space is limited.
Automated Workflows
The integration of SNP into NEP UK's OB trucks aims to simplify workflows in high-pressure live production scenarios. With minimal user intervention, the SNPs can handle multiple outputs from the truck, ensuring consistent quality for both UHD and HD broadcasts.
Mathias Eckert, SVP & GM EMEA and APAC for Imagine Communications, highlighted the adaptability of SNP. He stated that the platform's software-based design allows for quick reconfiguration to meet changing production needs, such as future requirements like 8K video. The partnership with NEP UK demonstrates a commitment to leveraging advanced technology in live sports coverage.
