NBC Sports and Major League Baseball have come to terms on a new agreement that will allow for the live streaming of baseball games in certain regional markets during the upcoming 2017 season. The games will be broadcast by NBC Sports in select markets and the streaming will be available on multiple platforms.
Season games will be available through the NBC Sports app and through CSN and will stream games from Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Oakland. The streaming will be available at no additional costs to subscribers of NBC Sports Group's regional sports networks in these selected cities. Fans will be able to enjoy live streaming from their devices for all Phillies, Cubs, White Sox, A's, and Giants games this coming season. Both the NBA and the NHL are already far ahead of the curve when it comes to live streaming and Major League Baseball is looking to play some catch-up.
“This is a home run for our local sports fans,” said David Preschlack, President, NBC Sports Regional Networks, and NBC Sports Group Platform and Content Strategy. “We are constantly looking for ways to better serve our fans and provide comprehensive coverage of their favorite teams. With the addition of MLB in-market streaming rights, they don’t have to miss a pitch.”
NBC Sports Regional Networks is NBC Sports Group’s portfolio of nine regional networks that delivers more than 2,200 live sporting events and original content to more than 43 million homes. Aligned within Eastern and Western Divisions, the NBC Sports Regional Networks are: CSN New England, CSN Philadelphia, TCN, CSN Mid-Atlantic and SNY; and CSN Bay Area, CSN California, CSN Chicago and CSN Northwest.
This announcement of a deal deal between NBC Sports and Major League Baseball comes more than a year after the league came to a streaming agreement with Fox Sports which has the broadcast rights to 15 of the 30 Major League teams. Major League revenues have risen in the last several years due mostly to extremely lucrative broadcast contracts rather than attendance which dwindles with each passing season. The league hopes to attract younger fans by being available on electronic devices even though their games run extremely late into the night at times.
