Fabian Weston, founder of Protist Lab Films, has created stunning microscopic films using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K. Weston, a former water lab technician and sound engineer, combines his passion for microscopy with his background in audio production to produce videos that highlight single-celled protists.
Unique Setup and Workflow
Weston began Protist Lab Films a few years ago, starting with just a microscope and his phone camera. After discovering Blackmagic Design's range of products, he decided to upgrade his setup. The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K's compatibility with various high-quality microscope lenses and its modular design made it an ideal choice for Weston.
Weston's custom-built rig connects the microscope directly to the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, capturing detailed images in Blackmagic RAW format. He then uses DaVinci Resolve for editing and grading, leveraging his expertise as a musician and producer to add original soundtracks to some of the films.
Recognition and Future Projects
The videos produced by Protist Lab Films have garnered attention in the scientific community. Weston won first place in Nikon's 2021 Small World in Motion Competition for a film documenting protists living inside Australian termites. This recognition highlights the unique approach he brings to microscopic filmmaking.
Weston expresses satisfaction with Blackmagic Design's products and support, praising their efficiency and ease of use throughout the workflow process. He plans to continue using Blackmagic gear for future projects, aiming to increase awareness of protists and their importance in the natural world.
