Two nights of Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s debut album promotion, “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent,” at The O2 Arena in London featured an ambitious live production setup. The sold-out shows, which saw all tickets grab within seconds online, utilized a sophisticated multicamera workflow centered around Blackmagic Design's ATEM Constellation 8K switcher.
Complex Staging and Advanced LED Screens
The performances were noted for their intricate staging, including a segment where Capaldi played piano atop an enormous LED screen. The production included an expansive three-sided LED wall, approximately 1,650 square feet, mounted on a kinesis system. Two additional screens were also incorporated into the design: a ROE Vanish V8S transparent screen that could lower in front of the band and another ROE CB5 screen positioned upstage.
Eight-Camera Setup
The video supplier, 4Wall Europe, deployed an array of eight cameras for the event. The setup included five camera channels, featuring two PTZ cameras and a single Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K mounted above the LED screen near Capaldi. Additional cameras were positioned at front-of-house, in the audience with box lenses, on a remote track and dolly system, behind the drums using a Towercam, and stage right on a pedestal.
Flawless Execution
Rhodri Shaw, director of live events for 4Wall Europe, described the setup as “incredibly ambitious” given the short run of two nights. The team had a week of production rehearsals but began rigging at four in the morning to ensure everything was ready on time.
For this show, 4Wall upgraded to the ATEM Constellation 8K switcher, which boasts 40 x 12G SDI inputs and 24 x 12G SDI aux outputs. The system was configured to capture all camera signals in 1080 50p resolution before routing them through the switcher for mixing. The final output was directed to disguise servers.
The complex design featured multiple scenes with three separate screens moving around the stage, creating a holographic effect. Shaw concluded that “despite the complexity of the rig, everything worked flawlessly.”
