Cinematographer Xavier Grobet selected the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K to capture underwater scenes in HBO Max’s White Lotus season two. Known for its compact design and exceptional image quality, the camera proved ideal for the challenging shooting environment of Sicilian waters.

Grobet's Choice Reflects on Previous Experience with Blackmagic

In 2015, Grobet had already praised the original Pocket Cinema Camera during preparations for the film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, noting its compact size and impressive dynamic range. This positive experience laid the groundwork for his decision to use the newer Pocket Cinema Camera 6K on White Lotus.

Grobet’s assistant, Fabio Ciotto, suggested using the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K with a Nauticam underwater housing for the season two shoot. After conducting tests and comparing footage quality with their main cameras, Grobet confirmed that the Blackmagic camera delivered exceptional results, seamlessly integrating into the production workflow.

Camera's Versatility Key to Successful Underwater Shooting

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K’s compact size and lightweight design enabled Grobet to easily transition between underwater and above-water scenes. During a critical fight sequence, B camera operator Armando Avallone found the camera easy to handle, allowing Grobet to focus on creative aspects of the shot.

“What impressed me most was not only the size of the camera package but the color science of the Blackmagic cameras,” Grobet stated. “The dynamic range and image quality were outstanding, making it possible to achieve our vision for these underwater scenes.”
