Colorist Remesh CP utilized DaVinci Resolve Studio to bring out the stunning visuals and cultural nuances of “Kantara,” one of the most talked-about blockbusters of 2022. The action thriller, directed by Rishab Shetty, features a unique blend of traditional Indian culture and natural beauty, which Remesh CP was tasked with portraying cinematically.
Color Grading Challenges
The film showcases the vibrant colors of Kambala, an annual buffalo racing festival, and Buta Kola, an art form involving divine dances. Remesh CP needed to create a look that felt both cinematic and true to life, especially for scenes set in a half-century-old village beside a deep forest.
ACES Workflow
Working with DaVinci Resolve Studio, Remesh CP employed an ACES color management workflow. This approach was crucial for handling large EXR VFX shots within tight deadlines, ensuring consistency across theater and streaming versions of the film.
Tool Efficiency
The advanced features of DaVinci Resolve made Remesh CP’s job more efficient. He used reverse and forward tracking of Power Windows, color warper, qualifier tools, HDR color wheels, and noise reduction tools to achieve the desired look for each scene.
Challenging Scene
One particularly challenging scene involved a nighttime boar hunt using only moonlight and headlamps. Remesh CP used DaVinci Resolve’s alpha matte feature to blend the 3D model of the boar with the night forest, applying grain effects and controlling sharpness with Power Windows.
Successful Outcome
The successful color grading in “Kantara” was widely appreciated, especially for its authentic portrayal of Indian culture. Remesh CP emphasized that DaVinci Resolve played a crucial role in achieving the director and cinematographer’s vision.
