Queens Public Television (QPTV), a non-profit community media center in Queens, New York, has completed a significant upgrade to its technical infrastructure with the help of Cablecast Community Media and KMH Integration. The project involved overhauling QPTV’s automation workflow, streamlining operations for six public access channels across three cable systems.

New Infrastructure Enhances Workflow

KMH Integration, which has a longstanding relationship with QPTV dating back to the early 2010s, was tasked with evaluating and redesigning QPTV’s technical setup. The team built a new 12G-ready SDI infrastructure, upgraded production facilities, and centralized all automation functions using Cablecast solutions.

“Upgrading our system was challenging due to frequent compatibility issues between different manufacturers,” said Daniel Leone, President and CEO of Queens Public Communications Corporation. “Switching to a single-vendor solution with Cablecast has streamlined our workflow and improved our ability to share content on social media.”

Cablecast Systems Installed for Enhanced Functionality

KMH Integration installed multiple Cablecast VIO 4 and VIO 4+ multichannel video servers for scheduling, content management, and cross-platform publishing. Six Cablecast LIVE servers were deployed to stream QPTV’s channels online, while a Cablecast VOD server was set up to manage the on-demand content library.

Branded Cablecast Streaming Apps are being used for OTT and mobile delivery of all six channels, and KMH is utilizing Cablecast REFLECT for live and VOD streaming content delivery. The team also installed five Cablecast CG Bulletin Board systems, enabling more than 260 non-profit organizations affiliated with QPTV to upload digital signage content.

Future-Proofing the System

The KMH Integration team designed the system to be fully redundant, with every primary baseband ingest and playout channel backed up by a secondary system. They also built an 8x8 Cablecast infrastructure to allow for future expansion, including capacity for eight endpoints for digital signage.

“We installed a 10Gb fiber backbone and upgraded the entire network to support high-speed media transfers between all floors using NDI, DANTE, and SRT,” said Kevin Henneman, Principal and Director of Engineering at KMH Integration. “This setup establishes a strong foundation for QPTV’s media operations and future growth.”

QPTV will demonstrate its reimagined workflows at the Alliance for Community Media 2023 Annual Conference in Brooklyn, New York.
