Full-service production facility Brilliant Screen Studios has implemented a unified post-production pipeline using DaVinci Resolve Studio software across all stages of its operations. The move aims to streamline processes and offer better value to both internal projects and clients.

Background on Brilliant Screen Studios

Founded in 2005 by Ace Underhill, the studio began as a small operation in San Diego before relocating to Los Angeles in 2011. There, it expanded its services to include production and post-production, as well as virtual production capabilities. Zack Ward joined Underhill in 2011, bringing his experience from acting roles like Scut Farkus in “A Christmas Story” to producing and directing.

The Post-Production Challenge

Despite advancements in production technology, post-production remained a source of frustration for Underhill and Ward. The complexity of managing multiple software applications and the time-consuming process of re-aligning elements across different tools posed significant challenges. “The garble of post-production drove me crazy,” Ward admitted.

The Solution: DaVinci Resolve Studio

Underhill identified DaVinci Resolve Studio as a potential solution to the workflow issues, particularly after experiencing difficulties aligning aspect ratios and transforms between different software packages. The decision was further bolstered by Blackmagic Design's advancements in editing, grading, VFX, and audio post-production within a single platform.

“DaVinci Resolve eliminates all of that complication and time wasted by providing an all-in-one post solution,” Underhill stated. The software's collaborative features also enable remote work, enhancing flexibility and efficiency.

Broader Blackmagic Design Integration

In addition to DaVinci Resolve Studio, Brilliant Screen Studios has adopted other Blackmagic Design products for its virtual production needs. This includes URSA Broadcast G2 cameras, Smart Videohub CleanSwitches, HyperDeck Studio 4K Pros, and UltraStudio 4K units, all integrated with Unreal Engine.

“Integrating Unreal Engine into our LED volume and green screen stages puts us on the leading edge of film and TV technology,” Underhill explained. The studio's new finishing theater features DaVinci Resolve and Fairlight control surfaces to further streamline its workflow.

Future Expansion

Brilliant Screen Studios continues to grow, expanding its offerings for both clients and in-house projects. With its integrated post-production pipeline and virtual production capabilities, the studio aims to provide high-quality services while maintaining efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
