More than 60 films at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival incorporated Blackmagic Design’s technology into their production and post-production processes. The festival showcased a diverse range of projects that leveraged the company's cameras, DaVinci Resolve Studio software, and cloud services to enhance workflow efficiency and creative flexibility.
Camera Usage
The URSA Mini Pro 4.6K and Pocket Cinema Camera series were popular choices among filmmakers. For instance, “A Common Sequence” directed by Mary Helena Clark and Mike Gibisser used the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro for their production. Similarly, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” utilized both the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and URSA Mini Pro 4.6K. Other films like “Infinity Pool” and “Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV” also employed the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K for various shots.
Software and Cloud Integration
The DaVinci Resolve Studio software played a pivotal role in post-production, facilitating tasks from editing to visual effects. In “My Animal,” Post Producer JP Castel highlighted the benefits of using Blackmagic Cloud for multi-user edit sessions, which enabled multiple editors to work seamlessly across different locations. The software’s features also included Fairlight for audio separation and Fusion for small VFX elements.
Several projects utilized DaVinci Resolve Studio for grading and editing tasks. For example, “Against the Tide” relied on Nicolas Perret at Gump Studios for color grading and Clément Allemand of Lemon Studio for online editing. Other films like “Infinity Pool,” “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” and “Mutt” also utilized DaVinci Resolve for various aspects of post-production.
Additional Equipment
Beyond cameras and software, other Blackmagic Design products were used to support the creative process. In “Radical,” DIT Francois Nobécourt employed an UltraStudio 4K capture and playback card along with a Smart Videohub 12x12 router. Similarly, “Shortcomings” utilized a Smart Videohub 20x20, UltraStudio HD Mini, DaVinci Resolve Studio, and Mini Converter SDI Distribution.
Colorist Natacha Ikoli of Nice Dissolve praised Blackmagic Cloud for its ability to facilitate remote collaboration during the pandemic. She noted that it allowed color grading to begin earlier in the process by enabling conform operations to occur simultaneously with look set sessions. This flexibility was crucial for projects like “Invisible Beauty” and “Joonam,” where Ikoli used DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel, Micro Panel, iPad, Speed Editor, Web Presenter 4K, and Blackmagic Cloud.
