Blackmagic Design has released Blackmagic Camera 8.1, a software update that introduces support for vertical video on its Pocket Cinema Cameras. This enhancement allows users to easily produce cinematic vertical content suitable for social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

The new update automatically rotates the camera’s on-screen heads-up display (HUD) when the device is turned sideways, ensuring that critical information like frame rate, shutter angle, and frame guides remain visible. Additionally, files are automatically tagged as vertical upon import into DaVinci Resolve, streamlining the editing process.

Enhanced Functionality for Vertical Content

The update simplifies the creation of vertical videos by allowing users to rotate the camera to shoot in aspect ratios such as 9:16 and 4:5. This feature ensures that important details remain in frame, even when shooting from different angles.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras come in three models—4K, 6K G2, and 6K Pro—each offering professional-grade features like high dynamic range, exceptional low-light performance, and Blackmagic RAW capabilities. These cameras are compatible with a wide array of lenses via EF or MFT mounts, providing versatile creative options.
