IBC2018: FilmLight Unveils Major Baselight Update
FilmLight has announced significant enhancements to its Baselight colour grading and management platform, designed to streamline complex workflows and facilitate more effective collaboration among creative teams.
The new features, set to debut at IBC2018 (stand 7.B26), aim to simplify the content creation pipeline by enabling multiple operators to work on the same scene simultaneously. This is achieved through intelligent branching, which allows for the creation of different versions of a scene (branches) that can be assigned to specific tasks or deliverables.
Branching enables long-life branches to be created for various deliverables, such as 2D, stereo 3D, and HDR versions. The Merge View feature then facilitates easy merging of completed branches back into the master timeline, eliminating manual copying and pasting processes.
Baselight's Enhanced Capabilities
Other notable updates include per-pixel alpha channels, which eliminate the need for additional layer mattes, simplifying compositing stacks and improving image quality. The Panorama 'sandwich' feature also enables efficient grading and processing of distorted 360˚ footage.
In addition to these workflow enhancements, Baselight's new features include Boost Range, an automated tool for boosting dynamic range from SDR to HDR, as well as Texture Highlight, which uses frequency analysis to avoid blocky highlights. The platform will also support the latest Dolby Vision software CMU.
The Blend panel provides a visual reference for blend operations, while Media Import Settings allow users to set up rules for media insertion and conformance from ALE files.
