Facilis Technology announced today, that the Canadian family drama series Backstage will be utilizing the highly acclaimed and dynamic TerraBlock shared storage solution for Season 2! Backstage is produced by Fresh TV and distributed by DHX. The popular Canadian series currently airs on Family Channel Canada and on the Disney Channel in the US and throughout the world.
The process of post starts with an offline edit on Avid Media Composer at Techicolor's Toronto facility by a team of three editors and by supervising editor and consulting producer Ellen Fine, CCE (Canada Cinema Editor). The team was in need of a way to collaborate and share media without restrictions, and to add enhancement to the first seasons method of only local storage. One may think that an Avid ISIS would be the way to streamline the approach, but due to budget and a need to improvise how far the allocation will go, they turned to Facilis!
“We wanted a system that gave us the freedom to be on whatever Mac OS we were comfortable with, running any version of Media Composer that we felt was stable without any worries about compatibility with the storage,” comments Ellen Fine.
The 16TB Facilis TerraBlock 8D system hit the "home run" as it pertained to budget and gave the team the 
flexibility they wanted while minimizing restrictions on Apple OS and Media Composer version compatibility issues with the storage. Connected through a 10Gb Ethernet switch and point to point 1Gb Ethernet lines were connected to five Mac Pro workstations. The ease of connectivity from the edit suites just empowered the team's efficiency and collaboration. The team wasn't quite finished at this point. In knowing how the show is filmed (ARRI Amira with dailies processed and synced at Technicolor) and the type of files received for edit (Avid DNxHD 36) and the knowledge of the producers wanting to incorporate the previous season's footage, the need for expansion was absolute. The team turned to Dynamix, a system re-sellar and integrator based in Ontario for the purchase of a 32TB TerraBlock 8D, which was added to the same Ethernet switch so access to both servers were ready without a glitch or hiccup!
“The great thing about our Facilis system is that we don’t need to think about it. It’s just rock solid and always there,” said Ms. Fine. “We organize everything very meticulously by episode in folders and bins. We store our music in a separate volume. It’s very efficient and just what we need to meet our deadlines.”
