Live ATSC 3.0 Transmissions, Consumer-Friendly Features of New Standard Highlighted in Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall Exhibits

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2016 – Viewers, broadcasters and manufacturers all will benefit from ATSC 3.0, the new television standard developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) . The ATSC 3.0 Consumer Experience and the Broadcast Pavilion - two large new exhibits at the fast-approaching 2016 NAB Show (Las Vegas, April 18-21) - will showcase a range of products and technologies that highlight the many new benefits and capabilities of the flexible standard and how it will respond to different demands.  The ATSC 3.0 standard specifies an entire next-generation broadcasting system, from the RF transmission through presentation to the viewer or listener and all the necessary items between the camera and the consumer. “NAB Show marks a watershed moment for next-generation broadcasting with the lion’s share of the ATSC 3.0 standard nearing completion.  In collaboration with the Consumer Technology Association, NAB, Pearl TV and others, we look forward to showing how consumers will benefit from the new over-the-air transmission system and how broadcasters can take advantage of the many benefits of the flexible and adaptable ASTC 3.0 standard,” said ATSC President Mark Richer.  “Nearly 30 companies are coming to the 2016 NAB Show to show off various facets of ATSC 3.0, and attendees will find two major displays showcasing the capabilities of the emerging standard.” On the upper level and at the entrance to the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, the ATSC 3.0 Consumer Experience is co-sponsored by Advanced Television Systems Committee, the Consumer Technology Association, and the National Association of Broadcasters.  More than a dozen contributing organizations will be showcasing products and services:
  • Dolby plans to highlight the captivating audio advantages of ATSC 3.0 broadcasts as well as Dolby Vision high-dynamic range;
  • Fraunhofer will showcase interactive audio on a big screen, with immersive audio on a tablet viewing experience;
  • LG Electronics will demonstrate how high-dynamic range enhances TV viewing, even with 2K broadcasts, and the capability to deliver more than one service in a single RF channel, along with innovative options for bringing ATSC 3.0 to devices throughout the home;
  • Linear Acoustic will show smart content engagement strategies, leveraging new standards in audio and demonstrating that audio isn’t only something you can hear, but can also see;
  • Pearl TV and Samsung plan to show 4K Ultra HDTV and how broadcasters can deliver video-on-demand to future viewers, along with the targeted advertising capabilities of the new standard;
  • Sinclair Broadcast Group and LG Electronics, representing the AWARN Alliance, plan a live broadcast of the Advanced Warning and Response Network – an ATSC 3.0 enhancement to today’s Emergency Alert System;
A variety of today’s antenna products also will be on display, designs that will also easily pick up ATSC 3.0 signals. The companion exhibit to the ATSC Consumer Experience, the ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Pavilion, which will be a centerpiece of the NAB Futures Park exhibit at the east end of the South Hall, upper level.  More than 15 organizations are exhibiting various broadcast equipment components designed for ATSC 3.0 in the Broadcast Pavilion:
  • Avateq will show an RF Layer Monitoring Receiver and Signal Analyzer, which allows an operator to monitor remote transmitting sites through a web interface;
  • CRC, ETRI, NERC-DTV, and University of Basque Country are collaborating to demonstrate a Layered Division Multiplex system that can be used to achieve seamless local coverage/service, such as location targeted advertisement or local content insertion;
  • Enensys is featuring its ATSC 3.0 Scheduler and ROUTE (Real-Time Object Delivery over Unidirectional Transport protocol) Server, designed to be the last point of the TV station before the transmitter;
  • Fraunhofer will present a workflow system to show how broadcast stations can produce immersive and interactive sound with the new audio system currently proposed for ATSC 3.0. and developed for over-the-top streaming services;
  • Junger Audio is showcasing Multichannel Monitoring and Authoring Unit;
  • LG Electronics, Harmonic, Triveni Digital and GatesAir have joined forces to produce the content that will be streamed from servers and transmitted via the Candidate Standard version of the ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer;
  • Linear Acoustic plans to demonstrate how the Dolby AC-4 system can enable direct and/or hybrid delivery of additional essence or content related (meta) data from a variety of sources upstream;
  • Verance is showing the first end-to-end implementation of the newly published ATSC 3.0 Candidate Standards for Audio Watermark Emissions (A/334) and Content Recovery over Redistribution Networks (A/336);
  • Unisoft is planning a demonstration of ATSC 3.0 delivery for interactive TV applications.
