High dynamic range (HDR) and cinematic virtual reality (VR) technologies are set to take center stage at Advanced Systems Group's annual workshop, scheduled for December 3rd. The event will feature free presentations that delve into the current state of HDR and VR technologies, as well as their potential applications in the broadcast and film industries.

HDR: Improving Image Quality

HDR is designed to produce images that more closely resemble what we see in the natural world by expanding contrast, increasing luminance, and creating darker black levels. This technology requires facilities to adjust their infrastructures and develop new workflows to accommodate the new format.

The workshop will also cover VR and augmented reality technologies, which create immersive environments for users. However, these computer-simulated sensory experiences require specialty hardware and software for content creators – and are incredibly taxing on processing power and storage.

Industry Insights

According to Dave Van Hoy, president of Advanced Systems Group, there is no current industry consensus on HDR standards, leaving video professionals excited but uncertain about the future.
