Aomori Cable Television in Japan has completed the installation of a new 4K production and retransmission system using products from Blackmagic Design. The upgrade includes ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K live production switchers, ATEM 2 M/E Advanced Panels, and Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pros.

Efficient Upgrade

Nao Miura of Aomori Cable Television explained that the station's previous switcher, installed about a decade ago, was experiencing issues. The decision to move to a 4K system allowed them to update their equipment while staying within budget. “Two sets of the new ATEM switchers fit within the budget of our old one,” Miura said.

Studio Expansion

The expansion into 4K production began in 2021 to support a city PR program. Four Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pros, an ATEM Camera Control Panel, and three HyperDeck Studio HD Pro recorders were added to the setup. Miura noted that while initially intended as a backup, both switchers are now used simultaneously for live broadcasts and emergencies.

Streamlined Operations

The studio's cameras and video playouts connect to a Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 router, with program outputs recorded on HyperDeck Studio HD Pros. The team also utilizes MultiView 16, MultiView 4 HD, nine SmartView 4K monitors, a SmartView Duo monitor, six Blackmagic Audio Monitor 12G units, and various Mini Converters and Micro Converters for signal conversion.

Compact and Flexible

The compact size of the Studio Camera 4K Pros allows for easy setup in small spaces with low ceilings. Miura highlighted the efficiency of using a single 10G Ethernet cable to connect each camera to the switcher, streamlining power supply and tally connections.

Remote Control Benefits

The ATEM Camera Control Panel enables remote adjustments of camera settings from the sub control room, reducing reliance on intercom communication. Similarly, HyperDeck Studio recorders can be controlled remotely via LAN cables, facilitating recording commands and media transfers without physical movement of media.

“The affordability of Blackmagic Design's products allows us to purchase additional equipment as needed,” Miura concluded, emphasizing the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of their 4K upgrade.
