At NAB 2023, Adobe has upgraded Premiere Pro to allow the first text-based video editing. The upgraded application automatically analyses and transcribes text-based snippets so editors can copy and past sentences in any order they want and see the associated video clip appear on the edit timeline.

Text-based editing is powered by Adobe’s Sensei, the company’s machine learning and artificial intelligence network. Transcripts can be searched in a new transcript window to identify the exact words and phrases being sought. Adobe said the new text-based feature will be a major aid to speed up documentary production. The update will ship this May.

In addition, Adobe has added automatic tone mapping and log color detection to Premiere Pro. It allows editors to mix and match high dynamic range (HDR) footage from different sources into the same standard dynamic range (SDR) project. This means editors no longer need to use look-up tables (LUTS) or manually balance footage.

Supported is Apple iPhone’s Dolby Vision HDR (HLG), Sony S-Log, Panasonic V-Log and Canon’s C-Log. Though the new feature requires no more hunting for and applying LUTs, a LUT-based workflow can still be used if desired.

Other new features include background auto save; system reset options; an Effects Manager for plug-ins; and greater GPU acceleration. Collaborative editing enhances include Sequence Locking, which enables active editors to lock a sequence so it becomes view-only to other editors.

Presence Indicators provide visibility on who is working on shared projects and Work While Offline allows editors to continue to work offline and then publish changes without overwriting others’ work when they return online.

Premiere Pro now adds improved format support for RED V-Raptor XL, ARRI Alexa 35 and Sony Venice 2 cameras with version 2 software. There is also GPU acceleration for ARRIRAW and R3D on Mac and Windows. AVC Intra performance has been optimized for Apple Silicon.

Also announced, Adobe’s After Effects includes a new Properties Panel that offers faster access for key animation settings in one place. The new panel is context sensitive and automatically shows operators the most important controls. New ACES and OpenColorIO maintains consistent colors when sharing assets with other post-production apps to help users create more photo realistic images.

Also, After Effects has performance optimizations that include faster timeline layer selection; multi-frame rendering shapes; and new keyboard shortcuts for Selectable Track Mattes.

Adobe also expanded its Frame.io video collaboration platform to include photos and PDF files. NAB 2023 sees Frame.io now offering an end-to-end workflow with the Fujifilm X-H2S and X-H2 cameras and Capture One photographic editing software with the addition of Forensic Watermarking to images.

Frame.io can now handle Fujifilm’s RAF (RAW), JPEG, TIFF and HEIF still files; 8K ProRes, HEVC and H.264 video; and can connect via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or smartphone.

With still photography, Frame.io expands traditional tethered onsite photography using Fujifilm and Capture One to remote workflows similar to what’s now available with video. Frame.io Camera to Cloud technology enables photographers to transfer photos immediately from their Fujifilm camera to the Frame.io cloud platform and then to Capture One editing without the need to remove or download memory cards to hard drives.

Frame.io also now supports PDF documents to aid production teams in reviewing collateral and other production material. New enhancements enable users to natively open and mark up PDF files on iPhones and iPads, while enabling all PDF and photo annotations to be seen on these devices.

Adobe also announced Forensic Watermark for working with sensitive pre-release content. By design, Forensic Watermark is easy for creators to use and difficult for leakers to circumvent. The new security service will embed invisible watermarks on video assets as short as 30 seconds, using pixel-level details that are capable of surviving screen recording, file copying and external recording.

The invisible Forensic Watermark markers enable users to investigate leaks with audits; reveal asset ID codes; projects; teams; accounts; user location; and playback time within hours. Forensic Watermark builds on Frame.io’s recent security certification by the Motion Picture Association’s Trust Partner Network.

In addition, Adobe said it is continuing work on its next generation post production platform, Firefly. The company said it is exploring the potential of natural language content creation with Firefly. With this technology, users can describe the look they want with the software changing the colors and setting to match that desired look.
