ActonTV, a PEG (public, education, and government) station serving Acton, Massachusetts, has been relying on JVC ProHD and 4KCAM camcorders to produce coverage of local sports and other productions throughout its community.

Sports Coverage

The station covers high school sports, including football, boys and girls hockey, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, baseball, basketball, and more. ActonTV uses three JVC GY-HM850 ProHD shoulder-mount cameras to produce sports coverage, which were purchased in 2014.

Tapeless Workflow

ActonTV began its migration to a tapeless workflow when it purchased four JVC GY-HM100 cameras in 2010. The camera's native file recording allowed the station to work seamlessly with Final Cut Pro without transcoding, which was a driving factor in the purchase.

New 4KCAM Camcorder

The station recently invested in a new JVC GY-HM200 4KCAM compact handheld camcorder. The camera features an integrated 12x lens with optical image stabilizer, 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS chip, dual XLR audio inputs, and color viewfinder and LCD display.

Streamlined Workflow

The new camcorder's wireless integration with the station's TriCaster systems (in the production truck and studio) is a key feature for ActonTV. The camera also includes a built-in HD streaming engine that allows live HD transmission directly to decoders, with support for various protocols for direct streaming to Ustream, YouTube, and other content delivery networks (CDNs).

ActonTV averages about 30 productions per month across its channels, including government meetings and original programming. The station's studio manager, Rick Degon, is a big fan of the JVC ProHD cameras, citing their high-quality image and ability to record at 60 frames per second.
